Understanding PTSD and Complex PTSD: Why One Size Doesn’t Fit All

By Dr. Bianca Ramosdelrio, PhD, LMFT — The Mental Wealth Doctor™

When we think of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), many imagine the struggles of combat veterans or survivors of life-threatening accidents. While these experiences can certainly lead to PTSD, the reality is that trauma takes many forms—and so does PTSD. No two journeys through trauma are exactly alike.

Let’s break down the different types of PTSD, why they affect each person differently, and how seeking help can bring relief and a sense of renewed life satisfaction.

What Is PTSD?

At its core, PTSD is a psychological and emotional response to experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. It can stem from:

  • Physical or sexual assault

  • Accidents or natural disasters

  • Combat or war zones

  • Loss of a loved one

  • Medical emergencies

  • Ongoing emotional abuse

Symptoms of PTSD may include flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance of reminders, hypervigilance, and mood changes.

Complex PTSD (C-PTSD): The Trauma That Doesn’t Quit

Unlike single-incident PTSD, Complex PTSD develops from prolonged or repeated trauma, often in relationships where there is little chance of escape. This can include:

  • Childhood abuse or neglect

  • Domestic violence

  • Long-term bullying

  • Hostage or trafficking situations

C-PTSD adds layers of emotional pain, such as chronic shame, difficulty trusting others, a fractured sense of self, and emotional dysregulation.

Why Trauma Affects Everyone Differently

Trauma is deeply personal. The same event might leave one person feeling resilient while another feels shattered. Here’s why:

  • Past experiences: Prior trauma can intensify or complicate how new trauma is processed.

  • Support systems: Access to support can buffer the impact of trauma.

  • Coping skills: Some people develop helpful ways to process trauma, while others might turn to numbing or avoidance.

  • Personality and biology: Genetics and temperament also play a role in how trauma is experienced.

No matter your story, your response is valid—and help is available.

The Power of Seeking Help

Reaching out for therapy can feel intimidating, but it’s one of the most powerful steps toward reclaiming your life. Trauma-focused therapy can:

  • Provide a safe space to process pain without judgment

  • Reduce flashbacks and anxiety

  • Rebuild trust and self-worth

  • Empower you to reclaim your narrative and create a life of purpose

At The Conversation Location PLLC, I utilize approaches such as Resonant Self-Narrative Therapy (RSNT), CBT, EMDR, DBT, and somatic techniques to help clients transition beyond survival mode and into a life that feels whole, connected, and satisfying.
